TITLE: HE IS THE KING, HE REIGNS
Matthew 2: 1-2
This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham: Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
Introduction
* There are two things I want you to see in the text…
* 1) He was known to be a king
* 2) He was worshipped by those who thought Him King
* To be a true king means…
* It means all the power and authority is in one person
* One person has the strength, one person rules, and one person sets laws
* One person executed judgement and one person possesses the land
History
* Yet in all of the different governments… In all of these ways of ruling over lands…
* Whether it be one King set over the people… or a group of people over others
* They are all kingdoms set up under the One True King and God overall
* All kings are what we would call under-kings
Jesus is King
* We see God creating things out of nothing…
* He created all of the countless angelic beings
* We see Him reigning over the stars and the moon and the sun
* He told the waters what to do… and how far they could come
* He established land and plants and animals
* And finally, to top off his creation… He created Man
The Importance of Jesus as King
* At some point God establishes a people that would not need an earthly King…
* He calls Abraham from his home and through Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
* A nation is born… A nation with God as its King… Which is important…
* Because all of the other nations on earth had a man or men or women as their kings and queens
* Now a nation is established where God is its King… A Theocracy
* All Kings are limited on this earth… they may think themselves to be gods…
* They are set up and allowed by God to be kings under him, but it isn’t enough
* They also want to be God and have people worship them… But they are mortal… They die
* They are limited by the size of their armies, the resources of their lands, their wealth, technology
* God however, is not limited by any of these things
Jesus Reigns Over All
* Notice when the Scriptures say…
* 1 Corinthians 15:25-27 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.”
* Even now He reigns and this world is and will be fully brought under His rule
Application
* How do we apply the kingship of Jesus in our lives today?
* How do we bow before His Headship today?
* If we rebel he is no less king. He may allow it for a time
* But all rebellion will be squashed
* The great rebel Satan tries to turn our hearts away from the true King
* He tells us we have power to rule and reign in our own hearts
Revelation 19:16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
