22 One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”

1) Consider The Setting
*One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let is go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out,
*He says… let us go across to the other side of the lake…
-The disciples obey Him and do as He says… We don’t know if they questioned Him or not
-Some of them were fishermen so they probably knew how to read signs of bad weather

-Regardless, they do it anyway… and maybe they had no clue

2) Then Comes the Danger

*and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, Master, we are perishing!”
*This seems to be the sort of response we should have right?
-When dangers come, we run to Christ
-I think that is a proper response to the dangers we may face in life
-And I would say, especially those faced while we are serving the Lord
*We in America have gotten so concerned with our lives
-We are unwilling to face dangers to serve the Lord
-We don’t want to go to the dangerous neighborhoods
-We don’t want to go to the dangerous countries
-We don’t want to speak up at school or in our jobs or in public
-We fear we will face ridicule

-The disciples left everything to follow Jesus

3) Jesus Displays His Power

*And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm.”
*Instead of focusing on God calming the storms in your life…
-I think this can lead to self seeking… comfort seeking people
-People that come to Him only for the miracles and run from the dangers and trials
-If we follow Him, we will face them… We will even go through them
-They will be painful at times… Paul faced them a lot
-He literally went through a storm at sea and the ship wrecked and he floated around
-Yet, through it, God put Paul exactly where He wanted him
*I want you to focus on the sheer power of this God made man
-What do we learn that He did? He awoke… He rebuked the wind and the waves
-They stopped at His word… There was a calm

-This is an awe inspiring display of power… He stopped the wind!

4) The Disciples Marveled at Him

*He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”
*They were afraid and they marveled
-This is the proper response to God as He stood there
-He looked at them and asked them… where is your faith? Where is it?
-Do you not know who I am? I am the great I am… maker and sustainer of all things
-Of course, I can do this… Of course, I can keep you safe… who do you think I was?
-He didn’t say that with His words, but it was implied
*I imagine Satan said the same thing when He saw what God had done…
-Who then is this man? This man who destroyed both sin and death?
-Hebrews 2:14-15
*The power at work in destroying death and granting you eternal life
-Is the power of creation… It is the same God who can do both
