12.27.21 THE REMEDY FOR A TROUBLED HEART, sermon at Trinity Baptist Church

TRINITY BAPTIST CHURCH sermon December 26, 2021

SERMON TITLE: THE REMEDY FOR A TROUBLED HEART
Luke 14: 1-11 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?[b]And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”[c]Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
Do not be Troubled
• “Let not your hearts be troubled”
* Do not be filled with confusion and unrest and anxiety
– Troubled here is the same word for the sea that was unruly before the disciples
– Jesus calmed that sea
* Jesus talk of His coming death troubled them
– He often spoke of His having to leave them
* The disciples were in a bit of turmoil even while Jesus is still with them
– Jesus had given them so much instruction and so much reason to trust Him, yet these upcoming events were about to shake their faith
* So… our hearts are troubled
– Often we are gripped mercilessly by it
– Yet sometimes we hide it or ignore the tough things
* Jesus says… Let not your hearts be troubled
– True worries should not lie in worldly things, but in the work of building the kingdom
* Notice: He didn’t say
– Do not be upset at mournful times
– Do not ignore the troubles around you
• Remedy 1: Your Savior is Trustworthy
* Believe in God; Believe in Me
– Jesus wants them to see that they are not just dealing with man here
• They stand in front of God and if they were to look close enough, everything they need to see or know about God can be seen in the person of Jesus Christ
* We need a little dose in trust
– We need to quit worrying and fretting over certain things. We need to believe in Him
• Remedy 2: There is a Place for You
* In my Father’s house are many rooms.
– Jesus says here, that in his Father’s house there are many dwelling places
• After this world is over, in the midst of your worries, know that there is a place for you in God’s Kingdom
• Remedy 3: He has prepared this Place for you
* If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
– When Jesus is speaking of preparing a place He is talking about what He is about to do
• Jesus has already told them in Ch. 13 He is going to somewhere they can not follow Him
• Jesus was going to prepare a way for them. Hebrews 12:2
• When Jesus went from them and was hung on that cross, killed, hurried, and resurrected, he was paving a way for them
• Remedy 4: He will Come and Take You There
* And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
– Jesus is coming for you
• Now we can spend a long time here trying to get to the when and how this will occur
• But the point is, He will come and take you to Himself
– So, if that is tomorrow
• If you die one day, You will be where Jesus is
• If you wait here until the second coming, You will be where Jesus is.
• Remedy 5: They knew the Way
* “And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him”
*Jesus said He is the way
– He wants Thomas to know he is the way all you have to do is remember remedy 1
– Let Jesus worry about the logistics
– Just believe on Him
* So… Jesus wants them to know He is the way to the truth that leads to the life
* Let not your hearts be troubled because you know the Way
• Remedy 6: We have Enough for our Troubled Hearts
* John 14: 8-11
– Open your eyes Philip… I am right in front of you…
•If you see me, it should be enough for you
– We want more because we do not see what we have
• You have the Holy Spirit of God dwelling within you
• The Holy Spirit convicts you and comforts you
• If you do not notice his presence and head His leading, you will be weak, although power dwells within you
